Cool Gizmo: Laser Record Player

Want those records to last forever? The laser record player is here to save the day. It'll play recods without even touching them. Nifty (my only criticism here is, though, that the thing won't play laser discs, too).

and all yours for "Starting list price: $15,000 US" :)

it mentions it's a purely analogue playback, but I would have thought something like that - as contrary as it sounds - might need some nifty digital filtering, as I would have thought such accourate tracking would be more likely to pick up and dust and grunge that a regular stylus would just nudge out of the way.

of course for archives, these are ideal (I think I read a while back that the BBC were getting some) as it won't impose any wear on the records.. wonder if I can borrow one to sample my old Urge Overkill 45s. :)

Now I have a serious case of techno-lust. :)

Maybe we can all chip in and buy one together, and just each hold onto it for six or eight months to rip all our vinyl to digital, then pass the player to the next person. Then we put it up on ebay. :D

Cool post you got here. It would be great to read something more about this theme. The only thing I would like to see on that blog is some pictures of any devices.
