My Name Is Your Name
Just a quick link, but Paul Collins posted a really interesting article this weekend about how the CPR dummies' faces are taken from a 19th century anonymous death mask that ended up having a popular life of its own in the first part of the 20th century.
The funny/disturbing thing is I know someone who really looks a LOT like her.

Wow, that's fascinating- and creepy as heck!
The more I think about this, the more fascinating it gets...
Could a face from out of nowhere captivate us in the 21st century, the way this (poor, dead) woman did? I suspect not.
At any given time, who IS the most beautiful person among us? Right now the idea of "beauty" (especially the female version) is so hyper-managed and manufactured, that a lot of people mistake certain easily-definable traits for "beauty."
For example: is Paris Hilton actually appealing to anyone? At all? She looks kinda like one of those plastic blow-up dolls, in most of the photos I've seen, only much narrower... she gives me the heebies. I know I'm gay so I'm not in her target market, but jeez...
Hm, that is kind of interesting to think about -- particularly since I always seem to be out-of-step with what the culture is saying are beautiful women -- I almost _never_ find any of the "flavor of the month" type women attractive, so... yeah. It's kind of an interesting thing to think about -- particularly because (and I realize this could be part of the "like-attracts-like" statistical fallacy) pretty much myself and everyone I know are all vaugely grossed-out by the Hyper Skeletal "Beauty Ideal" that keeps being promoted as the Ultra-Hawt Look. (i.e. one of the most attractive Famous Ladies I can think of is Thora Birch in American Beauty and (more so in) Ghost World -- although now she's lost a bunch of weight and looks all... scary now. To like, you just wonder if she's, like, able to be alive, she's so skinny.
....and, for what it's worth, as a straight guy, Paris Hilton is soooooo not attractive. In fact, I think she might have negative-attractiveness. So, yeah, if anything, the full horror of her is lost on you..8)
