Every increase in your knowledge is a simultaneous decrease.
You learn and you unlearn at the same time. A new certainty
is a new doubt as well.

That one is actually pretty cool -- although I think he got a different one than they usually give out. My old workplace was lousy with the things, and they don't really fit his description (not that he's lying or anything -- I'm just saying the RIAA stiffed him. Or, well, kinda, considering, as it turns out, apparently normal gold/platinum records are just random cast-off LPs spraypainted!)
Anyway, though, this came up on the Negativland list, and the general consensus was that what he actually got was a Stamper, the plates they use to press the grooves into records. (So, hence the "kinda" -- not only is it not like he would have got a real hunk of gold/platinum, but he actually got something cooler than what everyone else gets!)
But yeah -- I'd always wondered. But that makes sense, but I always found it funny that they don't even spraypaint one of your own records. Apparently Marvin Gaye played one of his when he was still alive (as it'd be kinda difficult now), and it turned out to be the Supremes.
Interesting! He got something rare, actually. Maybe he shouldn't have opened it. But how would he know?
I bet that's what they give to all the rap dopes.
