New Pornographers Twin Cinema

"They've shown this on both screens..."

OK, it took a few spins for me to really get into it, but now the New Pornographer's Twin Cinema is one of my favorite albums of the last year.

Links and audio in the complete post.

The album has had good but not universally positive reviews; most of the negative ones seem to concern the fact that it doesn't sound exactly like their last one. (Compare with the negative reviews for NIN's With Teeth, which mostly concerned how it DID sound like their older albums.) The pop hooks on Twin Cinema are buried a lot deeper than they were on Electric Version and Mass Romantic, but I think that's a good thing. In this interview, the group's main writer/singer Carl Newman explains how he deliberately gave Neko Case (the lone female in the band) all slower songs this time around, just because last time she got to sing all the real barn-burners.

One of these (slightly) slower tunes is also my current favorite from the album (I'm sure my "favorite" will rotate through all of the songs on the album eventually, like it did on Newman's solo album from last year, The Slow Wonder). You can download the song here: "The Bleeding Heart Show"

Cool; I've been on the fence on picking this one up (don't have any of their records, heh...), because everyting of theirs I've heard (which isn't much, though) has been pretty cool. I just downlaoded that one, but so I'll listen to it soon!

If you end up liking it, then you should REALLY like their first two. I'm not sure how to imagine someone hearing this album first, actually... just follow your instinct I guess. :)

Well, I'm still undecided as to how good this disc is. As of now, I like it a lot, but not enough for it to make my top 10 for the year. That may change though, as it's definitely a grower - having had some time to digest it, I find myself liking it quite a bit more than I did at first. But there's still a couple of tunes in the last half of the disc that leave absolutely no impression on me at all.

It is definitely one that takes time to really grab you, in my experience.

there's still a couple of tunes in the last half of the disc that leave absolutely no impression on me at all.

I hope "Sing Me Spanish Techno" and "Stacked Crooked" aren't among those... ;) Those two both kick my ass!

I love the New Pornographers -- Electric Version is my favorite album. I was hoping to see them when they come to Chicago in October, but tickets sold too fast. So we may be taking a road trip to Michigan!

Also, I have a huge girl-crush on Neko Case. She could totally make me switch teams. (and yes, my husband is okay with that!)

I don't even know if they're coming to Atlanta... I should look that up. I'd LOVE to see 'em play live.

And yeah, in a band of 9 people, Neko Case has about 25% of the total talent, and 98% of the total looks. Heh heh!! (Carl Newman captures 2% just for being a redhead.)

I saw Ted Leo and the Pharmacists play in Vancouver and the show was great. I think I've recommended them before but I'm not sure if anyone's a fan.
